A memory called empire arkady martine5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() These two books are both very well-written and plotted and lead to a page-turning experience. The book ends with a satisfying-enough conclusion but if I had got to the end and found ‘The story will conclude in the third part’ I would not have been surprised. ![]() In this second book, the action becomes principally external and is based on the ability of the protagonists to communicate with the aliens and prevent the spread of a devastating war. The first book had an inward focus, specifically on the interior of Mahit who, in common with leading members of her native space station, contains the consciousness of her predecessors in her own mind. As is often the case with the sequel to a high-concept opening novel, the action has broadened the premises of the world and the original vision is somewhat darkened. ![]() Our focus is placed on the supposed barbarian Mahit Dzmare and her empire friend and sponsor Three Seagrass, together with the new emperor and presumed heir, as well as several prominent people in the emerging war with the aliens. In the second and concluding part of this duology (which itself seems a strange thing – how many authors are able to restrict themselves to just two books for a series?), we return to the heart of the action. We let A Memory Called Empire with the Teixcalaanli polis in crisis : an attempted coup had been narrowly avoided but the threat of interstellar war had become apparent. ![]()

Asterios polyp graphic novel5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() However, I was angered by the ending of the novel: when Asterios and Hana are reunited at her home and reflecting on what they can possibly have again in a relationship, an asteroid comes out of nowhere on the next page heading straight for their house. I found the art style and the themes interesting, got a kick out of the references to Greek/Roman mythology and the duality themes, and I found nearly all of the characters interesting to follow (despite the rather little development they undergo as characters only Asterios really changes his ways in the stereotypical “man goes on life-changing journey and realizes he was wrong” arc), with Ursula Major and Hana being my personal favorites. Despite what the title of this reflection may say, I do not hate Asterios Polyp overall. ![]()

The society stalkerproblems5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Needless to say, that “the incident” was so bad that she can’t ever face Matthew again and goes to great lengths to avoid him whenever she sees him.Īt first I didn’t realize the crossovers from Matchmaker (Empire High, #4) to this book even with the Name Matthew Caldwell. She is afraid to actually date or even get too close to men due to what she refers to as “the incident” which happened the last time she was out on a date (with Matthew Caldwell). She does this so that her so-called stalker can see her as he leaves his apartment. Every Tuesday and Thursday before spin class, she sits outside on a bench across from a posh apartment building called One57. Much of it revolves around her “stalker” who in fact she is stalking.
